About the talk: Sir Laurie will discuss the failures of policy and strategy that led to the events of August 2021, and the human costs of those failures. He will offer personal reflections, from a practitioner’s perspective, on the outlook for Afghanistan under the Taliban. Laurie’s book, Kabul: Final Call was published in April 2024 and offers a first hand account of the fall of Kabul to the Taliban.
Biography: Sir Laurie Bristow is President of Hughes Hall. He was the UK ambassador to Afghanistan in 2021 and was in Kabul when the Taliban seized control. He was previously the UK ambassador to Russia during 2016-2020 & Azerbaijan 2004-2007.
