'Contesting Development: Civil Society in Mongolia and Kazakhstan'
Date: 31 January
Time: 11-1pm
Venue: Room S1, Alison Richard Building
Abstract: Dustin will look at interconnected dynamics relating to natural resource management, civil society and related contestations in Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Both resource rich countries with low population density, Mongolia and Kazakhstan's trajectories have been quite divergent since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Mongolia is heralded as a beacon of democracy surrounded by authoritarianism, but economically languishes, while Kazakhstan is deeply autocratic, yet has by and large achieved rapid economic growth. Where does civil society sit within these trajectories and what has been the influence of international actors, both private sector and non private sector?
Everyone is welcome.
