About the film: A woman's husband dies and she is forced to pay off his debts. A colleague at work is willing to wait, but in return demands sexual favors, which leads to her pregnancy and an illegal abortion. All this happens in front of her teenage daughter. The poster of the film is attached.
About the Director: Sharipa Urazbayeva graduated from the Kazakh Academy of Arts in Almaty. Her first film Maryam participated in the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland), her second film Red Pomegranate participated in the Busan Film Festival (South Korea). Tul is her third film. It won the prize for The Best Script in Bishkek Film Festival in 2024. Sharipa always raises the topic of women in his films.
Biography of the Speaker: Dr Gulnara Abikeyeva is a film critic from Kazakhstan. She is the author of 14 books about films and cinema. Two of them are in English: Cinema in Central Asia. Rewriting Cultural Histories (Great Britain), co-edited by Michael Rouland and Birgit Beumers, The Unknown New Wave of Central Asian Cinema (South Korea), co-edited by Kim Ji-Seok. She is a professor at Turan University, Almaty. Now Gulnara Abikeyeva is Visiting Scholar Commoner in Trinity College and she is currently continuing to work on Central Asian Soviet Cinema.
